Recovery

I look across a dark plain and see a girl
She seems a long way off
Trapped in dark days when all the world was pain
Bitter, hopeless days that felt like years
Became years of moonless nights

Those were days when every warm face was a turned back
She lacked heat
The beating of her heart was a cold clock

Today, when I look across that dark plain, I see her
The girl I was, before I was the woman I am
Wide eyed, I left you there

I am so sorry
I cannot take you with me
I cannot bring you to this warm shore
You see there is a vast body of water between us
And I cannot reach across it
